The Five Patterns

Cross-functional friction has five distinct structural patterns — each with a different root cause and a different design solution.

Identifying which pattern is operating determines the correct intervention. Treating a priority conflict as a communication problem, or a governance gap as a personality clash, will produce the wrong solution every time.

The Authority Gap

Two functions must produce a joint outcome, but no one has authority to decide when their priorities conflict. Both functions have legitimate claims. Neither can be overruled by the other. Every dispute reaches the MD.

The Shared Accountability Illusion

An outcome is nominally owned by two functions together. In practice, each function assumes the other is primarily responsible — until something goes wrong. Then ownership is disputed. Shared accountability without clear primary ownership is no accountability at all.

The Handoff Failure

Work passes from one function to another — physically, digitally, or informally — and something is consistently lost in transit. Information arrives incomplete. Context is missing. The receiving function spends the first part of every cycle recovering what should have arrived intact.

The Priority Collision
